Meet, MS, PA-C

Ryan Penrod is a premier and nationally certified Physician Assistant who has been caring for the Arizona community since 2014. Born and raised in Gilbert, AZ, he has lived in the Valley all of his life. With an early interest in health and wellness, he attended Arizona State University and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition/Dietetics. After graduating from ASU with honors, Summa Cum Laude, he set his sights on advancing his passion for health, wellness, and administering healthcare in a different capacity by delving further into the medical field.

Initially, he began his medical training in phlebotomy as well as EMT school, before entering graduate school to become a Physician Assistant.  He obtained his board certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies at A.T. Still University (ATSU) in Arizona.  While at ATSU, he had the opportunity to gain a vast array of experience in the

medical field, completing rotations in a variety of specialties from Internal Medicine and Pediatrics to Emergency Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery. In 2014, he graduated at the top of his class, earning the ATSU DPAS Faculty Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. 

Shortly after graduating, he began his PA career at Mayo Clinic, Arizona, in the Hepatology and Liver Transplant department. During his almost six-year tenure in the Hepatology and Liver transplant department, he had the opportunity to care for numerous complex patients with liver disease leading up to and following liver transplantation. He prides himself in providing the highest quality patient care possible, while also building trust and rapport with his patients and their families. To further augment his care of his critically ill patients, he completed an elective; Fundamentals of Critical Care for Advanced Practitioners training course at Mayo Clinic in 2015. In 2016, he was elected by his peers to join the Mayo Clinic NP/PA Leadership Society Board. He was also a member of the hospital’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommittee.

Ryan is adept at critically assessing clinical management of acute and sub-acute infections with the goal of improving patient outcomes. 

During his time at Mayo Clinic, he was afforded the opportunity to collaborate and learn from numerous experts in their field, including Dr. Mafi and Dr. Asbury, while they completed their Infectious Diseases fellowships. Given the immunosuppressed state of his patient population, Infectious Diseases were

a recurrent and reoccurring theme in his daily patient care.  Ryan frequently attends conferences for clinicians with up-to-date, evidence-based information on commonly encountered issues in Infectious Diseases. This exposure to the field of Infectious Diseases played a prominent role in his desire to join the team at Apex Physicians.  

Ryan is known for his thorough and compassionate patient care, bedside manner, attention to detail, and dedication to his patients. He is adept at critically assessing the clinical management of acute and sub-acute infections with the goal of improving patient outcomes. In his spare time, he enjoys fitness, listening to and playing music, and spending time outdoors with his golden retriever.
